After being called on a white lie he told during his Restoring Honor rally, Glenn Beck admitted Thursday that he stretched the truth because he "thought it would be a little easier."

Beck had claimed that he held George Washington's handwritten first Inaugural Address in his hands at the National Archives, but a spokeswoman at the institution said he did no such thing. Keith Olbermann, Ed Schultz and others called him out for the fabrication.

Thursday on his radio show, Beck copped to the lie.

You know what? The other day, because I thought it would be a little easier, I parked in a handicapped spot in front of my supermarket.

And then, while shopping, I switched the stickers on avocados I was buying from the expensive kind t to the cheaper kind. I thought it would be a little less expensive.

On the way home, I ignored the stop sign and ran over someone in the crosswalk. You know, because I thought it would be a little quicker.

Beck didn't admit nothing we, or at least some of us, didn't already know. His claim to have held George Washington's handwritten first Inaugural Address in his hands at the National Archive is a far stretch from a little white lie. It's a big lie. And lying because it is easier is something Beck does often, but not to well.

Of course he lied... owning up to that lie was perhaps the most honest statement that Beck has ever made. He is a liar and lover of lies though... he has been for the duration of his public life.

You know what being a liar and lover of lies is? It is adoration of the father of lies, satan. That's called satan worship.

Sure glad a satan worshipper is here to bring us back to god... /sarc.

Again, I should know better, but here goes:

Is this REALLY the biggest lie . . . the man took license. He was right there with the document, and the fact of whether he was physically touching it wasn't really even germane to the story . . . he was invoking the spirit of the moment - the awe and the reverence of the moment.

To see the posts on this, you would think you caught him lying about killing someone.

Is a little poetic license (and yes, I honestly think this kind of stretch, and the emotion of the moment warrants using "poetic license") really proof of that much?

Makes me question the fairness and accuracy of all the accusations leveled at Beck (not that some aren't very real and accurate).

Seems a little like the boy that cried "wolf".

Let the flaming commence!

Well, maybe not the biggest lie. But let's ponder this. Which is worse, a big lie to one person or a little lie to the whole world.

And if you are wondering about the ethics of all this, let's make it a hypothetical. If he were a West Point cadet and admitted to a lie like that, would he still be?

The CIA classifies lies as "white propaganda," "gray propaganda" and "black propaganda." The first consists of telling the truth, but telling it in a way that makes you look good. Gray propaganda means telling the truth but omitting key and significant details. A creatively edited tape might fall under this category. Black propaganda means disseminating deliberate falsehoods. By these criteria, Beck's lie was gray, not white. He did hold a tray on which was a clear container in which was the document. He just left out the parts about the tray and the clear plastic sleeve. But it is a pretty mild story compared with the whoppers told by that devout man of God Jerry Falwell, who promoted a video full of slanderous accusations against the Clintons, which he hyped with a video of a man photographed in silhouette who said that his life would be in danger if he revealed his identity. Turned out the silhouetted mystery man was no important secret witness, he was Falwell's producer and partner in making the POS video. Confronted with the lie, Falwell cheerily admitted it and explained that they thought it would be more dramatic if they filmed the promo that way. So, if that's what an American spiritual leader does and gets away with, why shouldn't the man promising to "restore honor" compromise a little of his own honor for the sake of a good story? That stuffy old commandment against bearing false witness is so old, so passe!

MMc - for most people a little lie like that would be no big deal at all. Beck however tries to pass himself off as someone who people should trust, someone who is being real and down to earth. This is a man who has done and said anything in the past to promote himself and gain the accolades of his listeners. Look at his past in radio and the hateful things he has done in the name of ratings. Now he is trying to pass himself off as a messenger of god. I think he is more like the massengil of god myself. I have no issues with anyone who is successful and especially admire those who come from humble beginnings and make it, but I have no use for people like Beck who are willing to lie and step all over people to make it. A small lie it was but it is the symptom of a much larger disease, @!$%#itis! Just take a look at his transformation over the past two plus years and tell me if you don't see a chameleon.

With a deadpan, Beck insists that he is not political: "I could give a flying crap about the political process." Making money, on the other hand, is to be taken very seriously, and controversy is its own coinage. "We're an entertainment company," Beck says.

There will be plenty who will poo-poo this and try to defend Father Beck as they are just not going to be able to connect the dots between "Restoring Honor" and telling a lie as being another insaniy. Well Father Beck does indeed need for his honor to be restored as he has just proven and those that continue to make believe that they think what he does is okay need to have their character restored. People who follow Father Beck aren't as stupid as they would have us believe but Beck, limpbag and Sister Sarah is all they have and hence they deny themselves to find some character within a humbling the rest of us though do not enjoy ,none the less will not suppress. It's okay to be humbled on occasion, it doesn 't make you weak, it only makes you human. To desire to reach out and touch the souls of people while realizing ones own flaws is a strength not a weakness that God had intended to pass down to humankind by way of Jesus not some blathering idiot on a pulpit trying to at all costs to create a bigger gathering. Father Beck is not about politics or history but instead an experiment on the darker side of humans going horribly wrong.............

I thought this little white, no let amend that, gray lie exposed a huge insecurity. He doesn't like leaving bits and pieces dangling. He wants absolute, unquestionable devotion. So, a little, spur of the moment lie, is perfectly excusable, in Beck's mind, to keep his flock loving him without question. He wants all this respect... but he just comes off as a little five year old: throwing tantrums, telling fibs, wanting forgiveness with tearful eyes - all because he wants to be loved.

I don't buy Beck's explanation that the truth would be too awkward to explain. All he would have to say is that Washington's Inaugural Address was held inches from his face, that he could feel the power of the words, etc. He's very good at rhetorical flourishes. He could have easily done it, but lies come so easily to him that it probably never occurred to him.

Has Beck ever spoken the actual truth about anything? His aura is really really bad. It sickens me just to watch him. What I pick up from this creep is extremely vile. Time ticks away the minutes of your life, Beck. The truth lies waiting to be told. At the end truth destroys the lies, and to put it mildly- you don't want to be the liar.

so from political hack, to entertainer, to televangelist...

I read this link CAREFULLY and RESPECTFULLY, and I ask you to consider this:

citing a biased site, that freely intertwines selected quotes with pure (and quite obviously biased) opinions, is hardly "proof" of much. Not the best argument: to reinforce your own opinion with the fact that there are others that share that opinion.

I was just stating, that after listening for some time to ALOT of Beck's comments, and having the luxury of quite a bit of context as a result, I came to the conclusion that labeling Beck as representing himself as a "messenger of God" is an exaggeration.

Perhaps you are confusing his strong belief that God is "in" us all (he talks about this quite often and openly). He, and I freely admit I as well, think that "being still" allows one to connect to "God" in a very spiritual way (I put quotation marks on "God" to signify no particular denomination). Not everyone obviously shares this view, and no problem with that, but that should not be confused with someone having a messianic complex - they simply aren't the same.

I'm with you. Just grab me a pea shooter too. It is really the right thing to do. Either that or capture him unawares and take him in a straight jacket to his new home. To be kind he will be given a mirror with a microphone in his new 'bedroom' where he can be special all he wants.

"I could give a flying crap about the political process. ... We're an entertainment company." -- Glenn Beck, in an interview with Forbes Magazine, April 2010.

One of few times in Beck's career where he was actually honest and candid about his purpose and the role of his employer in the political arena.

Performers don't need to speak the truth, they only need to have their lines memorized and be able to pretend as though they give a damn.

Let's look at it this way......the National Archives confirmed that Beck was there, and that they did show him Washington's Inaugural Address. That is irrefutable. Now....how many of YOU have been allowed to go in there? How many of you have the clout, or the pull, to get in there and even see one of these documents inches from your face? NONE! NONE OF YOU!

I think he made a huge error in not going ahead an taking the time to tell the whole story and preventing any unnecessary. Glenn sometimes has trouble getting out of his own way.

However....unless anybody in this thread has never done the same thing themselves, then they have no right to condemn him for doing something that they are equally guilty of.

To do so is called hypocrisy.

We all lie. True. It's a part of being human. Some lie for bad purposes like a conman who fools you into giving him your life savings, some lie for good purposes like not wanting to tell your wife, her jeans make her butt look fat.

However, those little pecadillos are among regular joes, people like you and me.

Beck can NOT claim that privilege for himself when lying in a public forum. A forum I might add full of people that seem to look up to him from what was shown in the news and videos.

What I consider worse is not so much the lie itself, but when he goes on his radio show and shrugs it off like it was nothing.

If he can lie to the people that support him, what will he lie about to the people that don't?

I just love the way that some folks here at NV read a post, gleam what they want, and ignore the rest. I said plainly in my response to Mr. Snyder that I thought Beck made a mistake by lying, even if it were for understandable reasons.

Andrew31 - I give you a bump for your reply! Well said....

I do not see celebrities as being anything special. People are people....they put their shoes on one foot at a time, just like the rest of us. I also see lies as being lies.....regardless of who tells them, or why. The lie Beck told, in this instance, was a lie of convenience. It did not hurt anybody, it did not harm anyone.....except himself. It was stupid.

But for people to want to metaphorically castrate him for it makes no sense to me when each and every one of us have done the same, or worse.

        SgtNickAngel,

I think you really need to learn some things about the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, commonly refered to as Mormon.

        1) Polygamy is the quickest way to get excommunicated from the church, and is only practiced by groups that claim to be Mormon but have splintered off from the church and have gone (for lack of a better word) rogue.

        2) We have many people that are very intelligent as members including the vaunted (by the left) Senate Majority Leader, Harry Reid.

        3) There is not a singular mindset to being a Mormon. While the Church teaches doctrine, it is up to each individual member to keep that doctrine and interpret it in their own way.

        4) We believe in Free Will and "individual salvation" over all. God put us here on this world to learn to be like him and we are not controlled by anyone but ourselves. We are encouraged to get to know God on our own outside of church.

        5) Most members are the first to admit that they are not perfect and do not always walk in the ways of God and Jesus Christ.

        6) If we are a cult, then why are we the FASTEST growing religion in the ENTIRE WORLD with over 12 million members?

OR you liberals could talk about the REAL issues facing America. jobs (or lack thereof...), crashing economy, out of control government/spending, etc.... Let the rest of us "idiots" worry about who we will/will not believe. Glenn Beck is a mute point. I'm more worried about those who are legislating us into the dark ages than I am about someone exercising his freedom of speech and others exercising their right to listen and believe him.

Well, we usually seed Beck seeds or Palin seeds. If you've got a good Beck/Palin story to seed, send me the link and I'll seed it.

Or did you mean that Beck seeds and Palin seeds were somewhat interchangeable, what with the common thread of delusion, paranoia, lies and legions of ill-informed followers?

No, he's not running for office or holding office. Good to see you have the clarity to recognize he's not a journalist. For some reason, the real power in the GOP is not concentrated in the hands of office holders. It seems to be concentrated in front of the cameras in the hands of former disco DJs, morning zoo shock jocks and tabloid news show anchors. Conservatives seem to like their leaders when they have a complete lack of accountability.

            Brent,

They do it to keep the spotlight off of their own ilk that are perpetuating attocities far greater upon this country. They think that a white lie by Beck is indicative of the entire GOP. Beck's lied, this is true, but it will not cost the country billions or trillions.

"We have to pass the bill so that you can know what is in it."

The left can run their maws, suck up and waste oxygen, and quite frankly turn their little "gotcha" party into one giant circle jerk, and quite frankly it wont make one iota of difference. When it comes right down to it, they think that attacking Palin, Limbaugh, Beck, Hannity, et al is the way to defeat the Republican party when in fact if they want to defeat the GOP they should stop focussing on the heads that are talking and should focus on the ones that they themselves have up their own asses.

When the left is innocent of lying themselves then come calling, until just shut the @!$%# up!

And do me a favor, save your "straw-man" attacks lefties. Lying is lying. When you can demonstrate that those on the left are completely innocent those of us on the right will do the same, until then, I really could not care less what those on the right say or do if it gets every one of the lefty pieces of crap out of office.

            Have a nice f-in day!

I find it an interesting phenomena then that you'd even care about what they have to say or do. If you mean to imply that our government is held accountable somehow, by someone, by what? The ballot box? The media? What media? Public embarassment, the fear of getting caught, maybe. The very fact that our congress has an approval rating in the teens (its been a while since I looked) gives these guys a voice, because guess what, there is no accountability. Conservative talking heads get their very power from liberals that only have sound snipits and ridicule in their arsenal. And, admittedly, no liberal talent that anyone can listen to. Nothing more, nothing less than pure dribble is posted against conservative talk. Most importantly, the federal government has no credibility with 80% of this nation. When this percentage comes close to reciprocating, your good friends Rush, Beck, Hannity and Palin will retire. Until then, I'll enjoy seeing your blood boil on the vine. :)

When a self-proclaimed "prophet" decides to hold a giant "Restoring Honor" rally on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, with nationwide attention, declaring he is there to help take back America, take back the civil rights movement, and bring this country back to god, and god this, and god that and then breaks a commandment while talking about all that, by lying on national t.v., it is news.

His integrity should definitely be scoffed at and scrutinized.

            douglasq,

Yes, I do understand the definition, and I have heard the accusation enough by those on the left when you point out hte hypocrisy of their arguments by supplying examples of their own kind being guilty of the very same things they are diplaying a furor over.

Whenever the accusations of lying are leveled at Beck, Limbaugh, and the like and it is shown that the left is just as guilty of lying, and on much higher level than just talking heads, they trot out the "nice straw man argument" as though the argument against them is made of wet tissue paper and is of very little significance.

there is no higher level of lying than when the lie is put out there in the name of honor and god in order to gain the trust of the people. doesn't matter whether left of right. when it is done by politicians or preachers, newscasters or columnists these lies become heinous and cannot be accepted as little white lies.

Well Glen, you really wouldn't have had to go into an elaborate story at the rally about how they handle the documents at the archive as you said in your cop out. All you had to say was the truth, "they showed me Washington's hand written notes." You see you lied to make it more dramatic, to enhance it and make yourself look better to the audience. And you inserted another lie in your cop out, a malicious one at that. The procedures at the archive for rare documents have nothing to do with Sandy Berger of the Clinton administration, they have been in place forever, and they are about preserving delicate old papers and protecting them from deteriotation, and you know it. So why did you throw in the barb about Sandy Berger? You just can't help yourself can you. You are a habitual liar.

Geln, what you have to understand is that there are no such thing as white lies for public figures. Every lie you tell is a big deal because it undermines your credibility. Let me put it this way, when a lawyer catches a witness lying, he never fails to ask the jury, "what else is he lying about."
